Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has now vowed to name individuals from former President Uhuru Kenyatta's regime who allegedly stole billions of shillings in the last three months leading up to the August 2022 general elections.

Speaking on Sunday, March 5, at Jesus Winner Ministry, Roysambu, Gachagua claimed that a number of senior government officials including Cabinet Secretaries (CSs) and Principal Secretaries (PSs) had gone on to loot funds after President William Ruto was declared the winner by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

According to him, the officials were receiving money packaged in sacks at their homes using planes that flew from the Wilson Airport in Nairobi. He promised to unmask the individuals behind the alleged sentiments in the coming days.

"These people robbed the nation. In the next few days I will be releasing details of billions of shillings looted from public coffers in the last three months of the Uhuru administration and announce the ministers and PSs responsible so that Kenyans can know," said DP Gachagua.

"At the police airwing in Wilson Airport is where money was being brought in sacks, packed into the planes, and taken to different homes."

Adding to his attack on "those fellows who kept on shouting that they cannot hand over to thieves", DP Gachagua claimed that there was a deliberate plan to lodge the presidential results petition before the Supreme Court to create time for more looting of funds.

"When they saw the election is not in their favour they looted public money with sacks. They knew the case would not amount to anything it was just there to allow them to steal and then go," stated the Deputy President.

"Even the petition they took to Supreme Court was forced on 'mzee wa maandamano' to allow them room to steal money while the court was listening to the case between the time IEBC announced William Ruto as President and the day he was sworn in they looted more than Ksh24 billion."

Gachagua further claimed that Azimio la Umoja leader, Raila Odinga, had no plans to file a petition to invalidate President Ruto's victory at the Supreme Court but was forced to do so, something he added had given the officials more time to steal.

“Even the Mzee (presidential candidate Odinga) did not want to file the petition but he was pushed to do so to give them room to steal public money between the time of the hearing of the petition and the swearing-in,” he said.

Addressing Tetu Constituency professionals converged in Nairobi on Friday, March 3, Gachagua alleged that the officials stole Ksh6 billion in the pretence of selling shares prior to the 2022 general elections.

Gachagua went ahead to blame the officials for the alleged theft of the funds in wanton circumstances, contributing to the dilapidated state of the economy. Furthermore, he reiterated that the Kenya Kwanza government inherited a dilapidated economy from President Uhuru's regime.

“I said during my inauguration about the country we inherited...some people thought I was being mischievous. We inherited a dilapidated country, the coffers were empty, the stores were empty, not even rats were there because there was nothing to eat,” said the DP.

“We have started building this country from scratch. All the good work that President Mwai Kibaki did in 10 years was totally destroyed. All the good work Kibaki did of building a strong economy, of having thriving businesses, of allowing people to trade freely, of making sure there is money circulating in the economy, all of it was destroyed especially during the handshake era.”

He said domestic borrowing from commercial banks at high-interest rates also contributed to the strain on the economy as the borrowers had also owned the same banks and could not negotiate interest to be charged, something he added the Kenya Kwanza government has since moved to stop with immediate effect to allow the country to recover.
