Jeff Mwathi Death: Gachagua Speaks On Investigations

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Friday, March 17 responded to claims of being silent over the mysterious death of 23-year-old interior designer, Jeff Mwathi.

Speaking during an interview with radio stations based in Mt Kenya, Gachagua noted that he was aware of the matter and that he trusts Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki to deal with it conclusively.

He further noted that he would be the first to speak on it if Kindiki was unable and that those involved in his demise should be met with the full force of the law.

“Kindiki is appraised on the matter and it is progressing well. We are in the same government and I can only address it if he is unable. That young man should get justice so that the cause of his death is determined.

“If at all anyone is involved in his death, the law should take its cause,” Gachagua explained.

Meanwhile, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) reported that it was intensifying its probe into Mwathi's demise after visiting the house of Lawrence Njuguna, alias DJ Fatxo, in Kasarani.

The DCI concluded the first process of the investigations which included interviewing of the first cluster of witnesses in the case, forensic examination of the scene and retrieval of CCTV footage that captured the deceased's last moments. 

Several other Forensic experts based at the DCI National Forensic Laboratory who augmented the Homicide team had equally collected crucial evidence and the same is being analyzed scientifically.

"We are now progressing to the second phase of the investigations where several persons of interest in the case will be interrogated and appropriate recommendations made before being forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions for action.

"In the meantime, the public is requested to exercise patience as the Directorate endeavours to establish the circumstances surrounding Jeff’s untimely death," stated the DCI.

The 23-year-old met his tragic end on February 22, 2023, under unclear circumstances, but Mwathi's case risked being a forgotten one as he was laid to rest on Friday, March 3.

It was initially alleged that he had the intent to fatally harm himself when he jumped to his death from the 10th floor of Redwood Apartments along USIU Road after partying with DJ Fatxo.

However, three days after his burial, Simon Mwangi Muthiora, a blogger and social media personality, brought to the limelight the circumstances leading to Mwathi's death, which were initially treated as mere postulation and propaganda before a vernacular TV station carried out its brief investigative piece on the matter, which then triggered a nationwide uproar.

DJ Fatxo threw a new twist on Mwathi's mysterious death by claiming that he was the one who went and reported to the police that Mwathi was missing.
