Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Saturday, December 23 arrested a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officer for allegedly stealing a firearm in the company of a woman in Juja, Kiambu County.

According to DCI's statement, the officer attached to KDF Kahawa Garrison, the woman and one other man are in police custody following their arrest at Windridge-Chai Estate for stealing a firearm from a stuck licensed firearm holder in Kirinyaga on November 25, 2023.

"They were arrested this weekend by a joint operations team from DCI Juja and DCI Headquarters and later escorted to Wang'uru Police Station in Mwea East where the firearm loss had been reported," stated the DCI in part.

In the incident, the male victim driving in his Toyota Prado had travelled to check on his shamba located in the county's Kianda area, and along the way got stuck in a murram road for hours.

Members of the public came to his aid pushing his car out of a slippery ditch by 8.30 pm, where he returned home.

On arrival, the 56-year-old realized that his mini CZ loaded with 14 rounds of ammunition which he had secured in his car during the recovery efforts was missing.

"He returned to the scene the same night searching for the firearm until 10 pm but could do little to trace anything in the dark and trampled muddy passage from an ongoing downpour.

"Efforts to ask around the neighbourhood the following morning proved futile until the ardent hawkshaws stepped in, exploring all intelligence leads until the recovery of the firearm in Juja, Kiambu County," added the DCI.

Investigations are underway to determine how six rounds of ammunition which were missing from the firearm were expended, as the three suspects are expected to spend the long holiday in custody.

Back in November, DCI recovered a Ceska pistol which was robbed from a civilian firearm holder in Kahawa Sukari on January 2023.

The DCI shared details of the recovery of the weapon on Tuesday, November 7 in a statement, coming following a search at a wounded man's house in Makongeni, Thika.

The search and subsequent recovery of the weapon followed an alarm raised by members of the public that an unknown man had been sprayed with bullets near the Thika Level V hospital on Monday, November 6, by an occupant riding in a Toyota Probox which then sped off.

In response to the developing events, the officers initiated a forensic ID process that provided his name and later traced his place of residence at Gireki Plaza Hse no. 10 located within the Kiganjo area of Makongeni.

A search therein saw the recovery of the Ceska pistol loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition which was hidden under the carpet alongside a roll of bhang. Initial investigations identified the firearm as the one robbed from a civilian firearm holder in Kahawa Sukari in January.

At the time, two armed men riding on an unmarked motorcycle accosted him at a construction site. His mobile phone and cash were also stolen.
