“We discussed various ways through which we will develop trade and investment relations between Kenya and the United States under our Strategic Trade and Investment Programme (STIP),” stated Kuria.
She indicated that it was an honour to head the Presidential delegation to President Ruto’s inauguration on Tuesday, September 13, 2022, and to meet with him to learn his vision for Kenya.
"Ambassador Tai and Cabinet Secretary Kuria noted the shared objectives of their governments as reflected in the joint statement launching the United States-Kenya Strategic Trade and Investment Partnership on July 14, 2022," a statement from the White House read in part.
Ambassador Tai and CS Kuria discussed opportunities to engage in the near future to pursue a strong working relationship that advances the common goals of the two countries.
This includes expanding bilateral trade with benefits that are broadly shared, the inclusion of women, youth and others in the trade, supporting micro, small, and medium enterprises, as well as advancing African continental trade integration.
The two expressed an interest in meeting in person in Washington in December on the margins of the upcoming United States-Africa Leaders Summit.
The meeting comes on the back of Kuria's plans to empower local industries and reduce the dependence on imports.
He categorically stated that he had plans to boost local production of clothes that will be available to Kenyans at a cheap price.
During an interview with Citizen TV, Kuria expressed that he will make the mitumba industry less competitive than the manufacturing sector and textile industries whereby Kenyans will have the freedom to purchase locally-made clothing over second-hand clothes at a cheaper price.
He was responding to alleged remarks hinting at a ban on the importation of mitumba second-hand clothes, which caused mixed reactions nationwide.
