Motorists travelling between Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) and Westlands will enjoy free access to part of the Nairobi Expressway for two nights, following a temporary waiver announced by the Moja Expressway Company.

In a notice issued on Thursday, May 7, the operator revealed that motorists will not pay toll fees between 9 pm and 6 am on both Thursday and Friday nights.

According to the company, the temporary arrangement has been introduced to minimise traffic disruption caused by ongoing construction works along Waiyaki Way.

“To facilitate ongoing construction along Waiyaki Way, a temporary toll-free arrangement on the Nairobi Expressway will be implemented from Thursday, May 7, 9 pm to 6 am and Friday, May 8, 9 pm to 6 am,” the company stated.

The firm explained that the move is intended to ease traffic flow during overnight works on the section between GTC and the ICEA Lion area, where construction activities are expected to interfere with normal movement.

Under the directive, motorists will be allowed to access the expressway through the Haile Selassie Entrance near Bunyala Roundabout and exit at the Nairobi Westlands exit without incurring toll charges.

However, the company clarified that the waiver will only apply to motorists using the designated entry and exit points, while all other toll stations on the expressway will continue operating under the normal payment structure.

"Please note that this toll-free arrangement only applies to vehicles entering from the mentioned stations. All other toll stations and routes will continue to operate under the normal tolling rules," the company added.

Drivers using the route during the affected hours have also been advised to observe traffic signs and cooperate with traffic marshals deployed along the diversion points.

The temporary changes come amid ongoing upgrade works along Waiyaki Way being undertaken by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) as part of the expansion and beautification of the A8 Road.

The project includes the expansion of the James Gichuru-Rironi stretch into a six-lane highway as well as the construction of new interchanges at Uthiru and Kangemi.

The highway remains one of Nairobi’s busiest transport corridors, linking the CBD to Westlands and serving as a key section of the Nairobi-Nakuru highway, meaning the ongoing works are expected to trigger traffic snarl-ups and delays for motorists.
