The Ministry of Education has released the 2023 education calendar for both primary and secondary school students, which consists of 47 weeks.

In a notice released on Friday, January 6, the ministry revealed that the calendar will go back to its normal schedule, having been disrupted for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the August 9, 2022, general elections.

Term One will officially start on January 23, 2023, until April 21, 2023, a period of 13 weeks. There will be a half-term break for three days lasting between March 23, 2023, and March 26, 2023.

The students will then break for the April holidays on April 22, 2023, for two weeks until May 7, 2023, when they resume for Term Two.

The second term will commence on May 8, 2023, until August 11, 2023, a period of 13 weeks. During that period, there will be a half-term break for three days between June 29, 2023, and July 2, 2023.

The students then break for the August holidays starting August 12, 2023, for two weeks until August 27, 2023 when they resume for the third term.

The third and final term commences on August 28, 2023, until November 3, 2023, a period of 10 weeks. This is the only term without a half-term break as students will be expected to close to pave way for the national examinations.

Kenya Certificate for Primary Education (KCPE) candidates for 2023 will write their exams on November 6, 2023, for three days until November 9, 2023.

Kenya Certificate for Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates for 2023 will write their exams on November 10, 2023, for three weeks and a day until December 1, 2023. Marking for KCSE begins on December 4, 2023, for three weeks until December 22, 2023.

Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang announced on December 23, 2022, that the results of the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations would be released by January 23, 2023.

"As we mark the end of the national examinations 2022 cycle today, all the examination handlers and examiners will have a busy Christmas as the marking of KCSE 2022 will start immediately.

"This is to ensure we release the results before the commencement of the academic Calendar for 2023," Kipsang stated.

With regard to the Form One selection after the release of the 2022 KCPE examination results on December 21, 2022, Kipsang noted that the candidates would know their high schools on January 16, 2023.

The 2022 KCPE was the second last national examination of its kind as the government plans to phase out the 8-4-4 curriculum for the competency-based curriculum (CBC).
