Approximately 35 students on Friday, May 26 lost consciousness during commotion witnessed at Ndurarua Primary School in Kawangware, Dagoretti North, Nairobi when anti-riot police officers lobbed teargas in their school.

A video seen by Viral Tea showed the students who collapsed following the effects of teargas being helped onto a police vehicle by residents.

Reports indicated that the students were going about their morning lessons when police officers engaged Kawangware traders in running battles, protesting the destruction of their make-shift kiosks.

At least two teargas canisters had landed in the nearby school, causing panic and forcing the students to scatter to safety. However, several students were unlucky as they were affected by the drenching smoke of tear gas emanating from the canisters.

Ndurarua Primary School PTA Chair John Njuguna revealed that the affected pupils were rushed to various hospitals where they are currently recuperating.

Three of the pupils were reported to be on oxygen support, with two of them admitted to hospitals in Kawangware.

Njuguna added that the school reached out to parents to come and collect their children after the incident further noting that the institution attempted to initially bar parents from accessing the school grounds but were overwhelmed by their large numbers.

One of the protesters was also shot and injured during the fracas with the demonstrators claiming that they had not been issued with eviction notices, further accusing police of attacking traders and area residents at random.

“They had not served us with any notices; the police just started attacking people and one of us was shot and injured as a result.

“We want to know what law allows for the demolition of property and harassing common mwananchi who work hard every day to make ends meet?” one of the residents told Citizen Digital.

The National Police Service (NPS) was yet to issue a statement on the incident, whereby Kawangware traders protested over the demolition of their stalls along Naivasha Road.

The traders lit up fires on the busy road that caused a traffic snarl-up, demanding to know why their stalls were destroyed and how they would earn a living as a result. This forced the police to intervene by lobbying teargas to disperse the traders.

The protest also affected adjacent roads leading to Riruta, Wanye and other parts of Kiambu County.

Aggrieved traders were reportedly angry against decisions by the Nairobi County administration to demolish their kiosks allegedly constructed on footpaths and feeder roads.
