Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested a key suspect in the murder case of British national Campbell Scott, days after he was reported missing and later found dead.

According to DCI boss Mohamed Amin, the suspect was apprehended in Mombasa on Sunday, March 2, and later transferred to Nairobi.

He revealed that the suspect had been on the run since Scott’s brutal killing on February 18. The suspect will be brought to court for a miscellaneous application to seek his detention as investigations proceed.

“We have the key suspect in the murder of the Briton after his arrest in Mombasa. He will be in court,” Amin told the press.

Two suspects, believed to be accomplices, are still at large, with investigators suspecting they may be hiding in either Nairobi or Mombasa.

Although detectives described the arrest as a significant breakthrough in the case, they did not disclose details regarding the motive for the murder.

A taxi driver and a waiter, who were initially detained as prime suspects, have been cleared of any wrongdoing and will now serve as witnesses in the case. The suspect is scheduled to appear at Milimani Court on Monday, March 3, for the application.

Meanwhile, an autopsy performed last Thursday at a Makueni mortuary by Government Pathologist Dr. Richard Njoroge yielded inconclusive results, as the soft tissue injuries found on the body were considered too minor to be fatal. Additional forensic tests are now being conducted.

What is certain, however, is that Scott was found dead in Makueni County, his body, wrapped in a sack, in Makongo Forest—about 96 kilometres from where he was last seen. Initial police investigations indicated that the businessman, last seen on February 17 at a conference in Westlands, may have been either struck with a blunt object or strangled.

Initially, there was uncertainty about whether the body belonged to the missing 58-year-old. Notably, the body was severely decomposed, indicating that Scott may have died hours or even days before being discovered.

His hands and legs were tied with a green nylon rope, indicating that he may have been killed elsewhere before his body was dumped in the forest. Authorities retrieved the body and transported it to Nairobi for identification, where it was confirmed to be that of Campbell Scott.

Since the discovery, multiple CCTV footages have emerged in media reports, including one which captured him leaving the hotel alongside Scott. Authorities suspected that the same individual arranged a taxi and accompanied the deceased to Nairobi’s Pipeline estate on Monday, February 17.

Scott’s murder has attracted international attention, prompting the DCI to enlist INTERPOL’s help in tracking down those responsible. His body was identified at the Makueni County Referral Hospital on February 24, after being held there for two days.

According to police, Scott, who had visited Nairobi before, was set to meet officials from the UK, US, and several African nations to discuss expanding his company’s market reach.
