Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate, Raila Odinga has beaten Deputy President William Ruto in a new poll released by IPSOS Synovate on Tuesday, August 2.

Raila scored a 47 per cent popularity rating while Ruto came second with 41 per cent, with less than a week to go to the August 9 general elections.

The poll continued to reveal that George Wajackoyah of the Roots party was third with a 2.9 per cent popularity rating, with Agano Party presidential candidate David Mwaure Waihiga having 0.2 per cent.

The firm explained that Mwaure was unknown to voters, hence his terrible performance. As for Wajackoyah, the pollster revealed that voters took issue with his marijuana legalisation agenda.

"The issue with Mwaure is that he is not known. On the other hand, the majority of those who will not vote for Wajackoyah indicated that they have an issue with his marijuana agenda," IPSOS revealed.

If the elections were to be held today, neither Raila nor Ruto would get the 50+1 per cent required to win the presidential race.

It was further noted that the Azimio candidate enjoyed a lot of support from Kenyans living in urban areas, at 51 per cent.

However, Ruto was more popular among Kenyans living in rural areas with a support of 45 per cent.

Raila enjoyed more support amongst men, in terms of gender, while the Deputy President was more popular with female voters.

"In terms of liability. Those who will not vote for Raila stated that they will not vote for him because of the age factor.

"Those who will vote for Ruto stated they supported him because they believe he has a plan. However, those who will not vote for him indicate that they have an issue with his integrity," IPSOS revealed.

The research firm further noted that Ruto enjoys huge support in the Rift Valley region and the vote-rich Mount Kenya region over Raila, which is a support of 66 per cent.

Raila is however popular in the Coast region, Nyanza and Western regions.

This is the first opinion poll to be released by IPSOS since the start of the campaigns.
