Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu once again defended her relationship with Mugithi singer Samidoh Muchoki arguing that polygamy was permitted in Kenyan law, despite the controversy the relationship generated for months.

The couple, who share two children together, has been the subject of intense public scrutiny.

NTV anchor Frederick Muitiriri had posed the question of polygamy to her on Monday, October 9 before she sharply retorted by posing a counter-question to him whether or not she is the only one who publicizes her family affairs on social media.

Muitiriri was however unfazed and reminded her that she is subjected to public scrutiny owing to her position in Parliament, whether or not she shares her personal details online.

She continued that she should not be asked about parading her family online as a series of Kenyan leaders do the exact same thing.

“Am I the only one who posts her family online? Have you seen the president’s family online? That’s not a fair question. Do you know Kenyan law properly?" she posed.

The NTV Swahili anchor then explained to her that the questions he was asking her were owing to demands from Kenyans to get closure on the matter and went on to directly ask why she was romantically involved with someone else's husband.

An enraged Nyamu countered by challenging Muitiriri to refer to the Kenyan law that legalises polygamy in the country.

"Go and check the law that was passed in our parliament about polygamy. I have not broken any law in that situation. There are kids involved, and I follow the law correctly,” Nyamu passionately responded when asked about the ethical dimensions of her relationship.

Muitiriri went on to inquire whether the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) senator believed herself to be a role model for the youth of Kenya, considering her high-profile relationship.

She responded by saying: “I live an open life, and I don’t pretend. I am free. What you see is what you get. Youths should pick up that, and they should not fear anyone. Don’t look at anyone and go for their dreams.”

Parliament passed a bill allowing men to marry multiple wives on March 20, 2014, which amended the marriage legislation and formalised customary law about marrying more than one person.

The proposed bill had initially given the first wife the right to approve her husband's choice for a second wife, but male MPs united and pushed through amendments that expunged the clause.

"When you marry an African woman, she must know the second one is on the way, and a third wife … this is Africa," Suna East MP Junet Mohammed said during a debate.

Polygamy is practiced widely in Kenya as is in many African countries by many traditional communities. It is also acceptable among the Muslim community, whose Sharia law ich allows a man to marry up to four wives but with the first wife's consent.

Nyamu's messy squabbles with Samidoh and his wife, Edday Nderitu drew the attention of UDA as well as Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua who urged Samidoh not to embarrass the country during his world tours as a musician on January 23, 2023.
