The Media Council of Kenya's latest report on radio listenership provides insightful data into how Kenyans are engaging with radio broadcasts throughout 2021 to 2023, at a time when radio remains the most pivotal platform for information and entertainment in the country.

This deep dive into the state of the media landscape offers a clear view of the shifts in listener habits, popular stations, and the technological strides affecting radio access in Kenya.

However, the report showed a noticeable fluctuation in the amount of time Kenyans spend listening to the radio daily, with the data revealing a consistent trend where a significant portion of the population listens to the radio for less than 30 minutes, with this figure slightly dropping from 10% in 2021 to 9% in 2023.

The most substantial listening block, 1-2 hours, saw a rise in 2022 but experienced a slight drop in 2023, balancing at 18%.

Interestingly, while the segments for 3-4 hours and 5-6 hours of listening have seen minor adjustments, the group of Kenyans who do not listen to the radio at all has increased from 22% in 2021 to 25% in 2023.

TV

Meanwhile, TV enjoyed its supremacy in the country above all media forms, with analysis showing that urban residents have a higher inclination towards TV consumption.

In particular, 83% of urban dwellers engage with this information medium while peri-urban areas recorded a substantial TV consumption rate of 79%.

A considerable proportion of Kenyans surveyed, at least 27%, allocate 1-2 hours to view television (TV) on a typical day. This represents a 2% increase from 2022 (25%) and an 8% increase from 2021 (19%). Another 20% mentioned they dedicate 3-4 hours to TV viewership.

Notably, 22% of the surveyed respondents indicated that they do not watch TV altogether. This is a significant drop from 42% in 2021.

Moreover, a majority (75%) disclosed that they typically watch TV during prime hours between 7:00 PM and 10:00 PM, with an additional 9% tuning in between 4:01 PM and 6:59 PM.

Citizen TV held its ground as the most-watched TV station in the country at 35 per cent in 2023 with NTV overtaking KBC to hit 11 per cent viewership in 2023.

KBC, which enjoyed 11 per cent viewership in 2022, the second-highest, slipped to sixth at 7 per cent, level with KTN News and K24 (4th and 5th).

KTN Home was third with 8 per cent. 7th to 10th slots were taken by Inooro TV, TV47, Ramogi TV and Maisha Magic.
