The game of love, though blissful, has to have that moment when reality hits in the form of 'game over'. In other words, everything has to come to an end at some point, even love.

We all break up with our significant others, one way or another...that is life in a nutshell. Breakups can take many forms between civilised and downright messy, but none break headlines in global entertainment scenes like celebrity breakups.

In Kenya, when celebrity couples call it quits, most of them wound up going back together, injecting Kenyans with the belief that when a breakup happens, the usual conclusion is clout-chasing...not this year though.

There are times when celebrities have broken up with each other and meant it, that is when he or she dumps their significant other to the point of no return.

Here are six celebrity couples who broke up with each other in 2023, and meant it:

Akothee and Denis 'Omosh' Schweizer

Businesswoman and singer Akothee married Denis Schweizer alias Omosh at a grand wedding on April 10, 2023. However, details of their eventual split two months after their lavish wedding were kept under wraps until November.

Akothee penned a message to firebrand lawyer, Miguna Miguna via a Facebook post on Thursday, November 2, apologising to him for ignoring his warning on marrying the Swiss national, whom she began breaking up with right after her honeymoon.

Akothee went on to narrate that she met Schweizer when she was ready to settle down, given that she felt she was lonely.

"Denis Found me at the time I was ready to settle down and he gave me the Love, attention and company that I needed then,  life as a superstar can be very lonely, I had no support from family or friends. On several occasions, I have felt like selling everything and going to hide somewhere no one would find me," she narrated.

According to the celebrity, Schweizer was her version of a perfect match, so much so that she ignored the red flags that would surface the minute their relationship shook entertainment platforms countrywide.

"I can say I ignored all the red flags, I convinced myself that this particular one was the right one for me. I was and still is innocent. I have forgiven myself for being naive, honest and stupid but that doesn't define me as a person. I win in most cases, I lost in this one and it's okay," she added.

After her realisation, Akothee disclosed that she was unable to force matters regarding love, given the lessons she has since learnt, a matter which triggered her to commence her road to exiting their marriage.

Lupita Nyong'o and Selema Masekela

Kenyan-Mexican award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o and her boyfriend, Selema Masekela parted ways on Thursday, October 20, through an Instagram statement where she revealed that she was publicly disassociating with Masekela, without directly mentioning his name, citing mistrust.

"There are many more important things going on in the world right now, and my thoughts are with those who are deeply suffering. At this moment, it is necessary for me to share a personal truth and publicly dissociate myself from someone I can no longer trust," she wrote in part.

Nyong'o, daughter to Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o, shared how she was thrust into a season of heartbreak which she blamed on a love suddenly and devastatingly extinguished by deception.

She further revealed that she was tempted to run into the shadows and hide, only to return to the light upon regaining her strength enough for her to say, “Whatever, my life is better this way.”

"I hope it’s true… I share this to keep it 100, and I hope that the knowledge of my experience might be useful to someone else out there experiencing the grip of heartbreak who is poised to try and escape from the pain and miss out on the wisdom that comes from it," Nyong'o continued, concluding with "Let’s face our pain so we don’t spread it."

Nyong'o and Masekela had only dated for less than a year and the split comes after she introduced him to the world through a video shared on her Instagram that went viral globally on December 23, 2022.

Phil Karanja and Kate Actress

Renowned actress Catherine Kamau popularly known as Kate actress and Philip Karanja aka Director Phil announced their separation in a joint statement on Tuesday, September 19, five years since they walked down the aisle in a lavish wedding.

“We came to a conclusion to end our marriage a long while ago and are separated. We sincerely request everyone to honour our wishes for privacy for us and our children,” read the statement.

Kate Actress, seemingly anticipating a series of subsequent questions from her fans following the split, revealed that she and Director Phil managed to keep details of their separation off the spotlight for a while.

Her sentiments were backed by Director Phil who assured fans that the divorce was between the couple only, asking them to allow them to move on with their lives.

Kate Actress and Philip Karanja formed a dynamic duo within the entertainment industry in Kenya and collaborated on diverse projects.

Vera Sidika and Brown Mauzo

This was one celebrity split that left Kenyans confused given the Kenyan socialite's notorious record of chasing clout. However, her split with Kenyan musician, Brown Mauzo, wasn't.

The Coast-based singer, who has two adorable children with the socialite, stated on Wednesday, August 30 that the two would focus on healing and looking towards the future.

"Dear friends and supporters, I wanted to take a moment to share some personal news. After much consideration, Vera Sidika and I have decided to part ways," he stated.

"Our journey together has been filled with unforgettable moments, but we have reached a point where it's best for both of us and our babies, Asia Brown and Ice Brown, to move forward separately."

In response, Sidika boarded an Emirates flight to Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi as she became a trend on social media hours after Mauzo's statement.

"Catch flights, not feelings. Guess my next stop," Sidika teased her fans who opined that her sudden vacation was a way of healing from the romantic split.

In April, the mother of two removed the title 'wife' from her Instagram bio, unfollowed Mauzo and removed his photos from her page safe for one. In response, the husband also unfollowed her deleting photos of her and only following his two daughters.

Tyler Mbaya (Baha) and Georgina Njenga

YouTuber Georgina Njenga on Thursday, July 13 announced that she broke up with former Machachari TV series actor Tyler Mbaya (Baha), confirming the speculations that emerged of their relationship encountering turbulent times.

One of her fans on Instagram had sought clarity from her on whether or not they were still together as her last post on Instagram of her baby daddy was on May 6, 2023. Njenga responded by saying "No...We broke up", indicating that she had parted ways with the former Machachari star.

Trouble started among the two when they unfollowed each other on Instagram, despite critics arguing that such a move among celebrity couples was a way of avoiding future gossip among them through their numerous social media posts of each other.

Hawkeyed netizens in early June realized the two had unfollowed each other moments after Baha was exposed as a scammer by US-based Kenyan woman Judy Maina popularly known as Nurse Judy.

The youngest couple in the Kenyan showbiz industry have been together since 2020 and shared a child. In a surprising twist, she later announced "I'm in a new relationship with my new man!"

Lung'aho and the former Tahidi High actress were once considered a power couple on social media. They had a two-year relationship before their official split at the end of July 2023.

They met in 2020 while shooting the TV series 'Zora' and began dating in February 2021. Despite the birth of their daughter in June 2022, they went their separate ways before her first birthday.

The ex-couple got engaged in April 2022 but parted ways barely a year later, with Matubia declaring that she was a "proud single mother of two" on her Instagram stories.

"I've already met Mr Player, Mr Stupid, Mr Idiot, Mr Psycho, Mr Cheap, Mr Lazy, Mr User, Mr Know It All, Mr Control Freak, and Mr Stalker, Where the hell is Mr right?" her message read.
