UPDATE: A police report seen by Viral Tea has revealed that the assailant who shot dead Mama Ida Odinga's bodyguard, Barack Onyango Oduor, was Collins Okundi, a manager of a popular club in Kisumu County.

The report was made by one Marilyn Marion Ouma a resident of Victoria Gardens Estate, who revealed that she left a bar in the company of her friend and the deceased officer before Okundi cornered them during a scuffle.

"Today the 14th of October 2022 at around 0330 hours, it was reported by Marilyn Marion Ouma a resident of Victoria Gardens Estate that she had left Dondez Bar & Restaurant as accompanied by her friend Donar Kajwang and a police officer Cpl Barrack Otieno Oduor(now deceased)(Bodyguard to Dr Aida Odinga).

"Upon reaching the Estate, one Collins Okundi, a Manager of Club Signature Kisumu suddenly appeared and a scuffle ensued between the reportee, Donar Kajwang and Cpl Barrack Otieno Oduor," read the report in part.

In the process, Okundi disarmed the police officer and fatally shot him twice in the head and leg. Kajwang was shot in the leg and was rushed to Aga khan Hospital Kisumu and is in stable condition.

Okundi immediately left with the firearm of the officer, whom police are still pursuing.

Mama Ida Odinga's bodyguard was on Friday morning, October 14 shot dead in Kisumu County by unknown assailants.

Her head of security, David Masaga, confirmed the incident as well as Nyanza regional police boss Karanja Muiruri, which eyewitnesses claimed took place at his Riat home in Kisumu West Sub-County, which is near Odinga's residence.

However, contradicting reports claimed that the bodyguard was out partying at a club in Riat in Kisumu West Sub-County.

The officer, identified as Barack Onyango Oduor, was reported to have been involved in an altercation with an unidentified man before the shootout ensued.

Oduor was also believed to be in the company of a woman before he was shot by the assailant, who is a manager of one of the clubs in Kisumu following a dispute over the woman. 

The attacker was reported to have escaped after the incident, which was believed to have taken place at 4.00 am in the morning.

The Kisumu police boss revealed that he would provide more details on the matter.

The woman and a man said to be in the company of Oduor, had incurred gunshot wounds and were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Police were yet to provide an update regarding the status of the duo.

Oduor's body has since been moved to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital.

"Yes, we have information of his being shot dead. We do not have further information as of now," said Odinga's spokesperson Dennis Onyango to the media.

Detectives assigned to the case launched a manhunt for the suspect after he escaped the scene.

Reports had also indicated that the wife of the former Prime Minister and Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga was safe.
