New details have emerged regarding the mysterious death of a young woman who was allegedly thrown off the 10th floor of an apartment in Kasarani, Nairobi County.

Preliminary investigations by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) indicate the victim met a man (name withheld) at an entertainment joint on the night she died.

The woman, who was wearing only a red t-shirt met the man in one of the entertainment joints along Mirema Drive in Roysambu on the night of Friday, March 1.

The two had partied for hours before they left the club in the company of another friend whom they had dropped off before they headed to the short-term rental apartment which they had booked for the night.

They are then said to have left again for a different joint where they spent time drinking in the male companion's car before returning to the house.

Homicide detectives are now trying to establish what transpired in the room after the duo checked in.

This is as detectives secured the interior of the house which was splattered with blood on the walls and the floor of the living room and bathroom as well as blood-stained bedsheets.

Meanwhile, the male companion was found unconscious with 10 stab wounds as the deceased was believed to have been pushed to her death. He was rushed to hospital for treatment.

Earlier, residents who witnessed the incident reported that they heard a commotion in the early hours of Saturday morning, March 2 before they saw her body fall to the ground floor. This is after noises were heard within the premises.

Police alongside the DCI were alerted to the scene where they transferred the body. They cordoned off the areas as locals flocked to the residence gate to see the body of the deceased.

This comes at a time when the number of deaths reported in short-term accommodation spaces with investigations still ongoing on some of them which had made headlines.

In mid-January, a General Service Unit (GSU) officer was arrested in Lang'ata on suspicion of being involved in an alleged suicide incident involving a 28-year-old woman, Nelvin Museti, who was found lying dead at the back of the apartment block after she was believed to have jumped on Sunday, January 14 at around 5.50 am.

A report by Femicide Count Kenya shows that at least ten women died in January 2024 alone. Additionally, 504 women lost their lives between 2019 and 2024.

Statistics amassed by Africa Data Hub reveal that in 75 per cent of cases, the femicide killings were committed by a person who knew the murdered woman - an intimate partner, relative or friend.

Nearly two-thirds of perpetrators were currently or had previously been in an intimate relationship with the victim, with husbands, and then boyfriends seen as the biggest culprits.

Husbands accounted for the most cases at 241 with boyfriends following at 130. Comparatively, in only about 15% of cases, the woman was killed by a stranger.

The most horrific of the murders in 2024 happened to a 20-year-old Jomo Kenyatta University (JKUAT) student, Rita Waeni, who was strangled and dismembered.

This prompted women across the country to stage nationwide peaceful demonstrations on January 27 and Valentine's Day, calling for an end to the senseless killings.
