Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir announced on Friday, September 8 that the county government has waived all fees associated with filming and photography.

The county boss held discussions with Mohammed Alby, a Kenyan TikTok star who went viral for his random compliments and pick-up lines that leave smiles on the faces of Kenyans walking along the streets, at his office.

The discussions between the two centred on how his administration could create a favourable atmosphere for content creators in the country to thrive in creating content that showcases Mombasa as a popular tourist destination.

"I welcomed M. Alby of the #MamboNation fame who paid me a visit in my office to discuss how my administration can support Content Creators in building the industry in Mombasa," stated the governor in part on his social media pages.

To facilitate this environment, Nassir scrapped all fees associated with filming and photography, seemingly borrowing a leaf from his Nairobi counterpart, Johnson Sakaja, who directed that freelance photographers and filmmakers operating within Nairobi County be exempted from paying for their business permits.

"We are also in the final stages of promoting the Mombasa Quarterly Content Creator's Day whereby Mombasa’s creatives shall be facilitated with professional services for the day by the County Government," he further announced.

Nassir is leveraging on his previous experience as a media professional to give content creators the power to flex their skills in a vibrant field which has since given Kenyans an avenue of making money.

Speaking during the World Radio Day celebration with the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) at Mombasa County on Monday, February 13 where he was a guest speaker, Nassir recounted beginning in production at a radio station before venturing into being a radio presenter.

After amassing experience as a radio journalist, he started Radio Rahma, his very own radio station, where he managed its affairs and also worked as a presenter.

"I worked at Pulse FM, where I began in the production department to radio presentation then went to marketing. I later started my own radio station - Radio Rahma- where I was a presenter and the manager," he announced.

However, Nassir was thrust into the political world, which made him strained, given that he had to sell his political image while managing the radio station at the same time, and eventually was forced to give up managerial duties.

The Mombasa county boss did not rule out returning to the media in the event he backs away from politics.

"I had to give out my rights of managing radio after getting into politics. If there is something I want to do after my life in politics is to get back into media.

"I previously worked with KTN presenter Ali Manzu, BBC journalist Roncliffe Odit, ex-BBC editor Joseph Odhiambo and Amina who ended up with the Voice of America," he went on.

Alby on his part received plaudits from the United States International University-Africa (USIU) which on Friday, March 3 celebrated Alby for his works in founding M. Alby Productions Limited, which deals in corporate digital marketing and film production.

He graduated from the university in 2022 with a Bachelor's degree in Journalism and his antics of spreading joy to Kenyans across the country have won hearts and a large online presence, especially on TikTok.
